  1. Qualification Examination (must be completed before the end of fifth year).
  2. Oral presentationin departmental seminar(must be completed before submitting the dissertation).
  3. Academic publication which meet one of the following two criteria:
    1. Two journal papers; one must be published in English, and the other must be of the 1st-author or corresponding author.
    2. One 1st-author SCI or SSCI paper.
  4. Dissertation submission and oral examination.
  5. Pass”English Proficiency & Graduation Eligibility Policy” is required to receive a Ph. D. degree.

Basic and Advanced Elective Credits: minimal 18 credits with the requirement of at least

a) 6 credits from *core courses of the doctoral program of Earth Sciences,

or

b) 3 credits from *core courses of the doctoral program of Earth Sciences plus 3 credits from other PhD programs of the College of Science.

*Core courses include Advanced astrophysics, Topics on geology, Theoretical geophysics, Topics on atmospheric sciences, Earth system: Ocean, Curriculum design and implementation in earth system science

English Proficiency & Graduation Eligibility Policy

  1. Students need to take the standardized English proficiency test before graduation and need to pass the criteria reference (see the table below).

Notes:Students who fail to pass the above criteria can take the English proficiency test supplementary course. Those who pass the course (600L) will be deemed as passing English proficiency assessment.

Procedure for clearance of University requirement

  1. Please finish your thesis and perform the following:
    1. To get the degree in Fall semester, a student needs to pass the Master/Doctoral Degree Qualifying Examination before the following Jan. 31st. To get the degree in Spring semester, a student needs to pass the Master/Doctoral Degree Qualifying Examination before Jun. 30th.
    2. Students have to pass ”English Proficiency & Graduation Eligibility Policy” before graduation.
    3. The deadline for receiving diploma is Feb. 28th for Fall semester and is Aug. 31st for Spring semester.
  1. Clearance of departmental requirement:
    1. Make sure the oral presentation application document, advisor thesis recommendation document, two copies of your thesis (one is hardcover, the other is soft cover) and a turnitin report with advisor’s signature for printed thesis are ready. The thesis has to include signature page signed by the “Degree Qualifying Examination Committees” (Thesis Oral defense committee members) and “Thesis authorization agreement”.
    2. Fill the clearance of departmental requirement form( *odt, *doc ) , and bring the material listed in step 1 to the department front office to complete the procedure.
