National Taiwan Normal University Department of Earth Sciences Regulations for the Awarding of Scholarships for New Master’s Students

Passed during the 2nd Departmental Affairs Meeting of the 2009 Academic Year on March 23rd, 2010 Amended and passed during the 2nd Departmental Affairs Meeting of the 2015 Academic Year on November 10th, 2015 Amended and passed during the 1st Departmental Affairs Meeting of the 2018 Academic Year on October 2nd, 2018

Article I. The scholarship shall be awarded once per academic year. Each awardee shall receive NT$10,000 for two consecutive semesters, totaling NT$20,000 of scholarship per student.

Article II. The quota of the scholarship shall be divided into five groups, namely atmospheric sciences, astronomy, oceanography, geology, and geophysics. Each group may nominate one student to apply.

Article III. Scholarship Qualification: New students who are enrolled in that academic year (including those who enrolled early), excluding those who deferred their enrollment while retaining their student status.

Article IV. Faculty members of each group are free to select their scholarship awardees (one student) on their own from the new master’s students of their group, under the condition that the awardees’ admission must be based on entrance exams or recommendation admission.

Article V. The awarding of the scholarship shall be implemented starting the 2018 academic year.

National Taiwan Normal University Department of Earth Sciences Enforcement Rules for “The Ministry of Science and Technology Pilot Program of Subsidizing the Scholarships for the Cultivation of Outstanding Doctoral Students in Colleges and Universities”

Amended and passed during the 7th Departmental Affairs Meeting on June 23rd, 2020

I. The current Enforcement Rules (hereinafter referred to as the Rules) are based on the “The Ministry of Science and Technology Pilot Program of Subsidizing the Scholarships for the Cultivation of Outstanding Doctoral Students in Colleges and Universities”, are aimed to reward and support outstanding doctoral students with research potentials to focus on their studies and research.
II. Qualification:
(1) First year doctoral students who have been admitted and registered in
that academic year (including students who have enrolled early in
February).
(2) Excludes Mainland Chinese, Hong Kong, and Macau students.
III. Terms and Amount of the Scholarship:
(1) The Scholarship shall be $40,000/month for each doctoral student. The
term shall begin on September 1st of the year and end on August 31st of the fourth year. The maximum term shall be four years. The scholarship shall continue until the month of graduation for those who graduate during the four year term. The scholarship vacancy left by the graduating student will not be filled.
(2) The scholarship shall be jointly funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the university, and the department or institute. In the first and second year, the Ministry of Science and Technology shall sponsor $30,000/month, the university shall sponsor $5,000/month, and the department or institute shall sponsor $5,000/month. In the third and fourth year, the Ministry of Science and Technology shall sponsor $20,000/month, the university shall sponsor $10,000/month, and the department or institute shall sponsor $10,000/month.
(3) Funding for the sponsorship must be self-financed funds drawn from the university’s endowment fund. Departmental or institutional funds must be sourced from university endowment allotted to the department or institute by the university; no funds should be drawn from Ministry of Science and Technology subsidies or funding.
IV. Number of Scholarships and Application Timeline:
(1) The number of scholarships for the department shall be determined in
the university admissions meeting.
(2) Qualified doctoral students must complete the application form within
the announced application period. The application should also include their transcript, master’s thesis, academic journal publications, books, patents, accomplishments, records of international competition awards,
and other supplemental documents. The nomination committee of the department will screen and select awardees and compile a waitlist for the scholarships.
V. Periodic Assessment and Impact Tracking Mechanism:
(1) Awardees of the scholarship should apply for a recommendation
renewal by submitting a complete report on their transcript, academic accomplishments, portfolio of works produced, and information on their participation in international events for the academic year before mid- June in the first to third year. Upon assessment and review by the department nomination committee, an approved list of students shall be submitted to the Office of Academic Affairs for scholarship renewal for the following academic year.
(2) Awardees of the scholarship should submit a complete report on their transcript, academic accomplishments, portfolio of works produced, and information on their participation in international events for the academic year before the end of July in the fourth year (final year).
(3) The department must conduct periodic assessment (by telephone interview, survey, or other methods) on awardees in the first three years after their graduation. The assessment shall be on their academic and research performance, or their contribution in industries, etc. Awardees should cooperate and provide relevant information. The assessment shall be submitted to the Office of Academic Affairs before the end of every July.
VI. Scholarships may be canceled in any one of the following scenarios. The cancellation shall be effective starting from the date of the occurrence and the scholarship may not be restored. The scholarship vacancy shall be filled in accordance with the waitlist submitted by the department.
(1) Awardees engaging in full time employment
(2) Awardees have applied for suspension of, or withdrawal from, studies (3) Direct Admission doctoral student awardees transferring back to
master’s studies
(4) Awardees failed to gain recommendation renewal from the department
or institute
VII. If any information submitted by scholarship awardees is found to be fabricated,
false, or tampered, their scholarship shall be canceled, and all scholarships awarded should be returned. Awardees will be held accountable for their actions.
VIII. Other matters not covered herein shall be governed by relevant regulations of the Ministry of Science and Technology and the university.
IX. The current Rules shall be implemented upon passage at a Departmental Affairs Meeting, and submission to the Office of Academic Affairs. The same shall apply to all of its subsequent amendments.

Enforcement Rules for the Five Ways of Life Scholarship Nominations

Amended and passed during the 1st Departmental Affairs Meeting of the 2017 Academic Year on September 19th, 2017 Amended and passed during the 6th Departmental Affairs Meeting of the 2019 Academic Year on June 2nd, 2020

 

I. The current Enforcement Rules (hereinafter referred to as the Rules) is based on the “National Taiwan Normal University Five Ways of Life Scholarship Regulations”.
II. Qualification: Current undergraduate students of the Department of Earth Sciences
III. Awards:
1. The Ethics Education Award: For those who demonstrate efforts to cultivate character education, clarify moral values, and promote a collegial atmosphere; those who are enthusiastic to serve and care about the wellbeing of the society.
2. The Intellect Education Award: For those who demonstrate acquisition of professional knowledge, or outstanding performance in academic or technical competitions.
3. The Athletics Education Award: For those who demonstrate a healthy physique, dedication to fitness, dedication to the promotion of mental and physical wellbeing, and integration of athleticism in their life, or outstanding performance in sports competitions.
4. The Group Education Award: For those who practice group cooperation, promote social relations, and realize the strength of collective wisdom and efforts; for those who demonstrate leadership, the spirit of mutual assistance, and fraternity among their peers.
5. The Aesthetics Education Award: For those who have enhanced the awareness of aesthetics and the understanding of the arts; for those who have demonstrated talents in humanities, arts, or music. Or those who excelled in artistic or musical competitions.
IV. Number of Awards and Nomination: The scholarship shall be awarded once per semester. Awardees shall be selected in accordance with the following guidelines:
1. Each class may nominate one candidate for each award (i.e., the awards for ethics, intellect, athletics, group, and aesthetics). If the size of the class is more than 50 persons, the class may nominate an additional candidate for each award. Each student may receive more than one award as long as they are not the same award. 2. All those who have met the descriptions of the awards and can demonstrate by specific deed in the previous semester may submit their application to the department office within the announced application period of the semester. The chair of the department will form a Nomination Committee with academic advisers and the student adviser (with one non-candidate student from each grade attending as non-voting member) from all grade levels. Upon approval by the committee, the recommendation form and list of student names shall be submitted to the Division of Student Services of the Office of Student Affairs for scholarship processing. Each
award winning student shall receive a certificate and a scholarship of NT$2,500.
3. In cases where there are no nominations for one or some of the awards in a class, the nomination quota may be used for other awards.
V. Funding: The scholarship shall be funded by the university under the item of Student Funds and Incentives.
VI. The scholarship shall be recorded in the student’s e-portfolio.
VII. Students who have received all five awards shall be awarded the “Certificate of Cheng Zheng Qin Pu” in a public ceremony.
VIII. The current rules shall be implemented upon passage at a Departmental Affairs Meeting. The same will apply to all of its subsequent amendments.

Travel Subsidy Rules for Graduate Students Attending International Conferences

Passed in the Departmental Affairs Meeting on November 7th, 2006 Amended and passed in the Departmental Affairs Meeting on June 13th, 2007 Amended and passed in the Departmental Affairs Meeting on March 8th, 2011 Amended and passed in the Departmental Affairs Meeting on May 5th, 2020

I. Qualification: Graduate students (master’s and doctoral) of the department
II. Travel subsidies for international conferences are limited to one subsidy per degree per person.
III. Subsidy Standard: The maximum subsidy for East Asia (excluding Taiwan) is NT$15,000; maximum subsidy for all other regions is NT$30,000. Expenses shall be reimbursed in accordance with the approved amount.
IV. Condition of the Subsidy: The applicant must be the first author (oral presentation or poster) of the monograph published.
V. Subsidy Guidelines:
(1) Priority will be given to doctoral students, senior level students, those giving oral presentations, and those with no other sources of financial support.
(2) Those who are supported by other agencies may be supplemented by per diem. The maximum amount of subsidy shall be 50% of the amount listed in the “Per Diem for Personnel sent by Various Central Government Agencies on International Business Trips” published by the Executive Yuan.
(3) The total subsidy the applicant received from all agencies must meet the standards stated in the Executive Yuan “International Travel Expenses Reimbursement Guidelines”, and must not exceed the actual total expenses incurred.
(4) Those who received no subsidies from other agencies must provide application documents for other agencies and evidence of denial of support. The maximum amount of the subsidy shall be in accordance with the amount stipulated in Article III.
(5) Upon conclusion of the conference, please prepare the following documents for reimbursement: conference program, evidence of conference registration, documentation for lodging, detailed living expenses, airfare, and ticket stubs.
VI. Application Deadline:
(1) Application may be submitted at any time. Applicants must submit all conference related documentations and apply at least 3 weeks before the conference.
(2) If necessary, the number of subsidies may be adjusted based on departmental funding.
VII. The awarding of the scholarship shall be implemented starting the second semester of the 2019 academic year.
